Root canal treatment

Root canal therapy can save a tooth that has become severely infected or decayed (root canal infection). When diagnosis indicates the need for a root canal treatment, the infection within the roots of the tooth will be removed carefully in order to relieve the pain and save the tooth.

Explanation of root canal infection

A root canal infection only starts hurting when pressing against a nerve of your tooth. Once your dental pulp and nerve are infected treatment is necessarily. This can be caused by a leaking filling, a hole in your teeth or by an accident. Your dentist will typically scan for such infections on your x-ray photos during regular check -ups, presenting as a black spot of infected tissue. Despite the fact that you may feel no pain (yet), it is nonetheless important to treat the infection right away. An untreated infection is bad for your entire body.

Treatment

For most patients, a root canal can be performed by our dentist at Keizer Karelpark Tandartsen within one or two visits depending how severely your tooth is infected. Once diagnosed, the dentist will prepare the treatment by ensuring that both the tooth and the affected area are fully anesthetized for the entire treatment. In our practice we use a dental microscope to find the root canals.

If your tooth was severely infected, we may opt to place a medication in your canals for one or two weeks before completing the root canal to effectively decontaminate the area. A temporary filling will be used in between treatments to keep the area sterile. The height of the tooth is reduced so that this new tooth is not an active player in the bite.

Your dentist will prescribe a final restoration for the tooth. It’s important to remember that teeth with root canals have a higher percentage of fracture as well. Sometimes, depending on the condition of the tooth, it is necessarily to place a crown to prevent fracture in the future instead of a filling.

After your root canal treatment

After treatment, you may experience similar pain than before treatment for about two days. You should avoid chewing on that side of your mouth for a couple of days or until the tenderness has subsided.

Cost of treatment (transparent pricing)

Dental care in the Netherlands is completely privatized but insurers do offer coverage in their supplementary packages. Costs are well regulated by the government so that no dentist, no matter how lovely their practice may look on the outside, is allowed to charge you over the stipulated government rates. Your treatment depends on the number of roots that needs to be treated. Before treatment we always provide a cost breakdown in advance to make sure there are no financial surprises.
